Brought to us by The Dunes

Reposted From Brightest Young Things:

"Members of local underground photography group, The Cult of Frank Van Riper, kick off Halloween weekend with the opening of their photography show, Cult, at the Gallery @ Social (http://www.social14.com/). Hosted by creative collaborative, The Dunes, Cult is a full-fledged art event offering art, music, and food. For $10, attendees can let their creative spirits out on the dance floor with music from DJ Adrian Loving (and a special guest), enjoy restaurant quality appetizers and finger foods, walk away with an original masterpiece on their face painted by Seema Khanna, or support their local arts scene with the purchase an original photograph from The Cult. Mark your calendars- it all begins at 6:30p October 29, 2010 at Social.

Cult History- Frank Van Riper served for two decades in the New York Daily News Washington Bureau, as an award-winning White House correspondent, national political correspondent and Washington Bureau news editor. Since 1992 he has been the photography columnist of the Washington Post. He teaches at Photoworks in Glen Echo Park and conducts workshops around the world with his wife, Judy Goodman. The Cult began in 2007, after a couple of classmates of Van Riper's Glen Echo class bonded over beer and bromides, otherwise known as "Suds and Silver" (in reference to the light-sensitive chemical composition of black-and-white photographic paper). The Cult now has over 65 members who range from part-time amateurs to full-time professionals and whose work includes fines art, fashion, landscape, weddings, photojournalism, and street and documentary photography. The underground group not only shares a love for cameras, and quality brew, but their listserv hosts a daily exchange of gig referrals, work reviews, technical questions and all things photography. The group meets regularly to socialize and shoot various events like the fire hose baptisms in Shaw, art show openings, and a member's wedding in Scotland. Membership to the Cult is not restricted to alumni of Van Riper classes; although, you must be knighted by him or his wife Judy in order to join. Once a member, you are privy to a wealth of photographic knowledge that should be protected, practiced, and preached to all those who will listen.

There is no other group like it! The Cult has a reputation across Washington, DC for outstanding work that reflects high-ethical standards and a willingness to challenge convention. Their show provides a sample of their ingenuity, creativity, and a bevy of diverse perspectives.
